SMARTWATCHES - COMPARED

Apple Watch vs Wear OS for Scoring Racket Sports

Both will happily keep score on court. The real question is which phone is in your pocket, and a few small things that matter mid-rally.

The short answer

The best smartwatch for padel is usually the one that matches your phone. Apple Watch only works with an iPhone, and current Wear OS watches like Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch need an Android phone. Both have bright always-on screens and enough battery for a long match, so pick your platform first, then a good scoring app.

Which phone do Apple Watch and Wear OS watches work with?

This is the big one. It decides everything else.

Apple Watch needs an iPhone. Apple's compatibility page lists the iPhone models each watch works with. For the newest models on watchOS 27, that is iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27 or later. Android phones are not an option.

Current Wear OS watches need an Android phone. Samsung says Galaxy Watch4 and newer "rely on Google Play services which is not supported on iOS." Google's Pixel Watch 4 specs say it "Works with most phones running on Android 11.0 or newer." Google's own Wear OS help also says watches on Wear OS 3 are not compatible with the Wear OS app for iPhone.

So if you have an iPhone, get an Apple Watch. If you have an Android phone, get a Wear OS watch. Easy.

Which smartwatch has better battery for padel and tennis?

Both will get you through a match with plenty to spare.

On Apple's battery page, Series 12 lasts up to 24 hours, SE 3 up to 18 hours, and Ultra 4 over 2 days. For workouts, Apple quotes up to 10 hours of workout tracking on Series 12 and up to 18 hours on Ultra 4.

On the Wear OS side, Google says the Pixel Watch 4 lasts up to 30 hours with always-on display in the 41mm size, and up to 40 hours in the 45mm size. Galaxy Watch battery depends on the model.

A 90-minute padel match is a small slice of any of those. Your real risk is forgetting to charge, not the watch dying mid-set. Battery life also changes with brightness, GPS and how you use it, as both brands point out.

Which screen is easier to read mid-rally?

You want to glance at the score between points, often in bright sun or under indoor lights. Brightness and an always-on display help most.

Apple lists up to 2000 nits on Series 12, up to 3000 nits on Ultra 4 and up to 1000 nits on SE 3, all with an always-on display, on its compare page. Google lists up to 3000 nits peak brightness on Pixel Watch 4.

Shape is a personal thing. Apple Watch is rectangular, while Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch are round. A good scoring app uses big numbers either way, so the score is easy to read on both.

Can you score without your phone nearby?

Sometimes your phone stays in your bag, or the bag is on the other side of the fence. How well a watch copes depends on the scoring app, not just the watch.

On Apple Watch, Scorepion has a standalone mode, so you can keep scoring when your iPhone is out of range. It works offline too. On Wear OS, check the app's store listing to see whether its watch app works without your phone nearby.

How does Scorepion work on Apple Watch and Wear OS?

Scorepion is a watch-first scoring app for padel, tennis, pickleball, squash, badminton and table tennis, on both Apple Watch and Wear OS. The rules, serve rotation and tie-breaks are built in for each sport.

On Apple Watch (watchOS 9 or later), you get one tap per point, Digital Crown undo, haptics for points, games, sets and match, a watch face complication, always-on display, a high-contrast UI and standalone mode. See Scorepion for Apple Watch.

On Wear OS (Wear OS 4+), it runs on Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch and OnePlus Watch. You tap once per point, undo, change server, and your match history saves automatically. See Scorepion for Wear OS.

On both, you can score each round of an Americano tap by tap. So if your group mixes iPhone and Android players, everyone can still use the same app. More on the padel scoring app page.

So which is the best smartwatch for padel?

  • You have an iPhone: get an Apple Watch. SE 3 is the budget option, Ultra 4 has the longest battery and the brightest screen.
  • You have an Android phone: get a Wear OS watch, such as a Pixel Watch or Galaxy Watch.
  • You already own a watch: use it. The app matters more than the badge on the back.
