BADMINTON RULES - THE CAP AT 30

What Happens at
29-29
in Badminton?

Badminton games go to 21, win by 2 - but not forever. Here is exactly what the cap at 30 means and why it exists.

The short answer

If the score reaches 29-29, the win-by-2 requirement is suspended. Whoever scores the next point wins the game outright, 30-29 - no 2-point lead needed. This is the hard cap at 30, the highest score a badminton game can reach.

Below 29-29, the normal rule applies: you need 21 points and a 2-point lead to win.

Why the cap exists

Badminton games go to 21, win by 2. At 20-20, that means play keeps going until one side pulls 2 points clear - 22-20, 23-21, and so on.

Without a limit, two evenly matched players could keep trading points indefinitely and never separate by 2. The cap at 30 guarantees every game has a definite end - the score simply cannot go higher than 30-29.

How it plays out step by step

1
Score reaches 20-20
Normal play continues. Whoever pulls 2 points clear first wins the game (21-19, 22-20, and so on).
2
Neither side pulls 2 points ahead
Play continues, trading points, until the score reaches 29-29.
3
Score reaches 29-29
The win-by-2 requirement is suspended from this point on.
4
Next point is played
Whoever wins the rally wins the game outright, 30-29, even though it is only a 1-point lead.

The shorter format has its own cap

Scorepion also supports a faster casual format: first to 11 points, win by 2. The same capping logic applies at a lower target - the score cannot go past 13-12.

Whichever format you play, the rule works the same way: win by 2, unless you hit the cap.

Does Scorepion support the cap rule?

Yes. Scorepion applies the cap-at-30 rule automatically in badminton mode, so a long, close game still ends correctly without anyone needing to remember the exact threshold.

Common questions

Can a badminton game go past 30 points?
No. Once the score reaches 29-29, the next point wins the game outright at 30-29. Thirty is the highest score a badminton game can reach under the standard 21-point format.
Do you need to win by 2 points at 29-29?
No. At 29-29 the normal win-by-2 requirement is suspended. Whoever scores the next point wins the game, even though it is only a 1-point lead.
What is the highest possible score in a badminton game?
30-29 is the maximum score under the standard first-to-21 format. The shorter first-to-11 format has its own lower cap, at 13-12.
