Mixed Americano: How It Works
Same rotating-partner fun as a normal Americano, with one extra rule: every pair is one man and one woman. Here is how it works and how to run one.
The short answer
A mixed Americano in padel is a social doubles event where every pair is one man and one woman, and partners rotate every round. Each round is played to a set total of points, and every player banks the points their pair scored. Clubs often run separate men's and women's ladders, but some use one combined table.
What is a mixed Americano?
A mixed Americano is a normal Americano with one pairing rule on top. You still get a new partner every round. You still play to a fixed number of points. You still collect your points on an individual ladder.
The twist is who you can partner. Every team on court is one man and one woman. So a man only ever partners women, and a woman only ever partners men. Your opponents are a mixed pair too.
If you are new to the format itself, start with what an Americano is and how it works. Everything there still applies. Mixed just narrows the list of possible partners.
How does a mixed Americano work, round by round?
Here is a typical night at a padel club:
Over a full event, the aim is that every man partners every woman once. With 4 men and 4 women on 2 courts, that takes 4 rounds.

The biggest practical difference is the numbers. A classic Americano only cares about the total. A mixed one also cares about the split.
How many players do you need for a mixed Americano?
You need an equal number of men and women. A common guideline is at least 4 of each for a proper rotation, so 8 players on 2 courts. Popular sizes are:
- 8 players: 4 men, 4 women, 2 courts
- 12 players: 6 men, 6 women, 3 courts
- 16 players: 8 men, 8 women, 4 courts
What if the split is uneven? Say 5 women and 3 men turn up. You have a few options:
- Let one or two same-gender pairs play each round, and rotate who does it.
- Run a classic Americano instead. Nobody minds much on a social night.
- Put a player on a rotating bench, if your numbers also break the multiple of 4.

How does scoring work in a mixed Americano?
Scoring is the same as any Americano. Every rally is one point. The round ends when the two scores add up to the target, like 16-8 in a 24-point round. There are no games, sets or deuce.
Each player banks the points their pair scored that round. No bonus for winning the round. A draw, like 12-12, pays both pairs 12.
One ladder or two?
This is the one real choice. Two common approaches:
- Separate ladders. Rank the men against the men and the women against the women. You crown a winner in each. This is fair because each person only ever plays with the other group.
- One combined ladder. Everyone on one table. Simple and social. Both partners bank the same points each round, so it still works.
Both are fine and clubs do it both ways. Tell players before round 1 which one you are using.
Why do clubs run mixed Americanos?
- Balance. Many clubs find pairs come out more even when every team is mixed.
- Mixing. Everyone meets people outside their usual game.
- Mixed doubles practice. It is a relaxed way to get reps in mixed play before a proper mixed event.
- Couples-friendly. Partners can sign up together without always playing together.
Can you run a mixed Americano in Scorepion?
