Americano Scoring: Draws, Ties and How the Ladder Works
It's 12-12 and the round is over. Nobody won. That's not a mistake, it's how an Americano is meant to work.
The short answer
Yes, an Americano round can end in a draw. Each round is played to a set total of points across both pairs, so a 24-point round can finish 12-12, and that's a legal result. In a draw, both pairs bank their points in full, and there's no bonus for winning, so a draw simply pays everyone 12.
How does scoring work in an Americano round?
An Americano doesn't use games and sets. Each round is played to a total number of points, counted across both pairs. Common targets are 16, 24 or 32.
Every rally is one point. Keep playing until the two scores add up to the target. In a 24-point round, that could be 14-10, 16-8 or 12-12. It could even be 24-0 on a very bad night.
Then every player banks the points their pair scored. Win 14-10 and you and your partner each bank 14. Your opponents each bank 10. New partners, next round.

Can an Americano round end in a draw?
Yes. If the round target is an even number, a level score is possible. At 24 points, 12-12 is a draw. At 32 points, 16-16 is a draw.
An Americano draw is not a problem to fix. There's no extra point, no tie-break and no golden rally. The round is over, and the result stands. Club guides like The Padel Lounge's list 12-12 alongside 15-9 and 17-7 as normal results.
Here's what each player banks in a 24-point round:

Some clubs avoid draws with an odd target, like 21 or 25, because two scores can't be level if they add up to an odd number. Scorepion sticks to even targets, so draws can happen. Most clubs don't mind. An Americano draw is a fair result.
Why don't wins matter in an Americano?
Because the ladder only counts points. In a standard Americano there's no bonus for winning a round, and no games count.
That sounds odd at first. But think about a close round. Lose 11-13 and you bank 11. Lose 8-16 and you bank only 8. A close loss beats a heavy one. Every single rally matters, right to the last point.
It also keeps things friendly. You can't coast after going ahead, and you're never out of a round.

How does the Americano ladder work?
The ladder is a running total for each player. After every round, add each player's banked points. The highest total at the end wins.
Say it's a 24-point Americano, after four rounds:
- Maya: 14 + 16 + 12 + 13 = 55
- Tom: 10 + 14 + 12 + 17 = 53
- Ana: 12 + 13 + 16 + 12 = 53
Maya leads. Tom and Ana are level on 53.
The two numbers on every court always add up to the target. So across the whole event, the average player banks exactly half the target per round. That's a handy check: in a 24-point event, finishing well above 12 per round means you had a strong night.
What happens when players are tied on the ladder?
This is where clubs differ. There's no single official rule.
Some clubs break ties with head-to-head results. Others count rounds won, compare point difference, or play a quick extra point or short playoff. PadelMake and ILY Padel each suggest their own order of tie-breaks, and they don't match. If your club uses one, it should say so before play starts.
