Your First Padel Americano: What to Expect
Signed up for your first Americano and not sure what you're in for? Here's how the night runs, how the scoring works and how to make the most of it.
The short answer
At a padel Americano, you get a new partner every round and play short rounds to a set number of points, like 24. Every point your pair wins goes onto your own tally, and the player with the most points at the end wins. A typical 8-player event on 2 courts takes about 2 hours, and nobody expects you to be a pro.
What happens at a padel Americano?
You turn up, get a partner you might never have met, play a short round, then swap. That's it. Repeat until the organiser calls time.
You don't need to bring a partner. Most people sign up on their own, and that's the whole point. By the end of the night, you'll have played with and against most of the group.
Here's how a typical evening runs. Timings are rough and vary by club.

An 8-player Americano on 2 courts usually lasts around 2 hours. Bigger groups need more courts, not more time.
How does scoring work at a padel Americano?
Forget 15-30-40. Every rally is one point.
Each round is played to a total number of points, often 24 or 32. When the two scores add up to the target, the round ends. So a 24-point round might finish 15-9. You and your partner each bank 15. Your opponents each bank 9.
Two things surprise first-timers:
- Every point counts. Losing 11-13 still banks you 11. Never give up on a round.
- A draw is fine. With 24 points, 12-12 is a legal result. Both pairs bank 12.

Who serves at a padel Americano?
This one varies a lot, so listen at the start. Some clubs change server every 2 points, some every 4. Either way, the serve usually rotates through all four players so everyone gets a fair share.
If nobody says, ask. Settle it on court before the first point and you'll avoid a squabble at 10-10.
Normal padel rules apply to everything else. Serve underarm, bounce it first, and hit it into the diagonal box.
How do you play with a partner you just met?
This is the fun bit, and the bit people worry about. A few quick habits make it easy.

What if your partner is much better, or much newer, than you? Relax. Next round you'll get someone else. Over the night, the luck of the draw mostly evens out. Being a good partner is part of the game.
What should you bring to a padel Americano?
Keep it simple:
- Your racket (and a spare grip if you sweat a lot)
- Proper court shoes
- A water bottle
- A towel
- Your phone, if you want to keep your own score
Balls are usually provided, but check the event details. Wear something comfy and don't overthink it. It's a social, not a final.
Arrive about 15 minutes early. Late arrivals can hold up the round one draw, and the organiser will thank you for being on time.
How can you keep track of your own score?
At most Americanos, the organiser keeps the official ladder. Still, it's nice to know where you stand between rounds.
